BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PARISH
Glory be to the God almighty, for great and mighty things he has done for us, particularly in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RIVER OF LIFE PARISH, Alpha and Omega Area / zone.
This parish “River Of Life” was established in July 1995, by love chapel at Olaniyi Oko Oba. A perfect number of seven workers were initially sent out by the indefatigable pastor M.O Modeke to start the parish named “LIFE CHAPEL”. Those pioneer workers were led by Pastor Peter Oni (The pioneer pastor).
The new parish commences services at Jay Hotel Hall, situated at Jay Bus Stop along Nureni Yusuf Road. The said hotel was owned by a Muslim who said God had instructed him to release the hotel hall for God’s use without payment of rent. The parish lasted about 4 years (1995 - 1999) in Jay Hotel Hall.
However, it was a pulpit rotation of May 1999, under the supervision of Pastor Temitope, the Area Pastor of Ojokoro Model Area that necessitated the coming of Pastor John Oluyamoju from Glory Hall to Life Chapel. Pastor John Oluyamoju ensured the acquisition of the present land (where the parish stands) and movement of Life Chapel from Jay Hotel to the present location in July 1999.
The present Children Auditorium earlier on, served as the worship venue and the church was also renamed RIVER OF LIFE (REV 22 V 1) from its previous name Life Chpel. Pastor Farinto took over from Oluyamoju in September 1999. Pastor Farinto conceived the idea of starting the present main auditorium but not until or before the use of canopies for worship.
The plan of or use of canopies was however short-lived when the Area Pastor of Success Area, Pastor Femi Olugbode came in on 1st May 2000 as the Parish Pastor. During the tenure of Pastor Femi Olugbode, the foundation stones were laid to God’s glory by the mission’s elders. The parish pastor, Pastor Olugbode constituted a seven member building committee led by Deacon Kola Buyide. This committee, God has used immensely and immeasurably for the ultimate completion of this building and they are still in place.
When this parish became an Area Headquarters in September 2001, Pastor Farinto was returned as the Area Pastor with Pastor Akinronbi as the Parish Pastor. God used both men in furtherance of the construction work. Pastor Afe Johnson took over from Pastor Farinto as Area Pastor. Pastor Afe Johnson took the church auditorium to the next level as he ensured the completion of the roofing and began the flooring work. Pastor Afe’s tenure took effect from 1st September 2002, while Pastor Akiode took over the parish reins in September 2003.
When Pastor Akiode was finally transferred, Pastor Afe Johnson appointed Deacon Samuel Sola Ayeni to act as Parish Pastor until this eventual confirmation as substantive parish pastor in January 2004. Pastor J.O Adebayo took over from Pastor Afe Johnson in February 2004 and in September 2006 assistant pastor Mike Shobowale succeeded Pastor or Deacon Ayeni.
At the inauguration of the parish on 17th July 2007. Pastor J.O Adebayo and M. Shobowale were the area and parish under shepherds respectively. Pastor J.O Adebayo was succeeded by Pastor A.K. Adesina while Pastor M. Shobowale’s transfer culminated in the assumption of Assistant Pastor Bernard Adeyanju as the parish pastor in February 2008.
Pastor Bernard Adeyanju landed over the apostolic baton to Assistant Pastor Akinwole Lekan Akin in March, 2010. The succession of Pastor A.K Adesina by Pastor E.O. Easn was in April, 2010. This change was a very controversial one in the Parish history but to God be the glory for the restoration of peace, love and harmony. Ever since, peace and love are no more scare commodities (II Corinthians 13:11) as God of love and peace has remained with the members and the parish as well as the workers and ministers.
It must be mentioned here that the church (Parish) dedication on 17th July, 2007 was adore by the General Overseer of the mission Pastor Eunuch Adejare Adeboye through his special assistant and regional Pastor (Region 2) Pastor (and wife) Pastor (Mrs.) Wole Haastrup. Pastor of the Province (Province 17 province of ultimate excellence). Pastor and Pastor (Mrs.) J.O. Oni, his able Deputy Pastor (Mrs.) G.O. Eniola, the Zonal / Area pastor Pastor and Mrs. J.O. Adebayo and the chairman building committee, Elder Oladapo Aiyelokun who were all present at the dedication service, deserve mention for God’s work which did not cease (Neh. 6:3 ).
The official inauguration of River Of Life Parish under Omega Area was conducted by Pastor O. Boniface Okenwa, the then Lagos State II Pastor on the 19th November 2000, before the dedication over seven years after.
